AT THIS time of the year, we tend to look back over the previous twelve months, regret our failings and attempt to shape our future and better ourselves. We resolve to eat less, exercise more, be kinder, thriftier, etc. etc.
At the same time, experience tells us that hardly any of these New Year’s resolutions will be kept. What can explain this failure? It seems we are creatures of habit.
Scientists, however, have different explanations. One of these explanations is that we fail because we are rational, calculating creatures. The costs from eating less or saving more are immediate. The benefits are remote and uncertain. We “discount” them heavily. We promise to ourselves that we will eat less tomorrow. But tomorrow never comes."
