"Government warning to Bulgarian Turks
By Jean Christou
THE GOVERNMENT has issued a veiled threat to Bulgarian Turks who live in the north, following questions over whether they would be allowed to cross to the south after entering the island illegally.
The issue was raised earlier in the week after Bulgaria became a member of the EU, when the head of the Bulgarian Turkish Cultural Association in the north said the Bulgarian foreign ministry had told them that all Bulgarians living there would be free to travel to all parts of the EU, including the government-controlled parts of the island.
There are some 2,000 Bulgarian Turks living and working in the north, and until now the government has refused them entry on the ground that they were classed as settlers.
