"SMOKING: CYPRIOTS ARE CHAIN SMOKERS
(AGI) - Brussels, May 30 - The biggest smokers are not Turkish but the people from Cyprus, Eurobarometer says. Eurobarometer has published a research on smoke on the international day against smoke that regards not only the EU-25 but also the candidate countries like Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. According to the survey the biggest smokers are in Cyprus. They are 44 pct compared to 37 pct of Turkish people and 27 pct in the EU-25 and Italy. The Greeks come second (40 pct). They are the people who smoke more cigarettes a day (23.2 compared to Cypriots' 21.3). The most virtuous countries are Sweden (smokers are only 18 pct) and Netherlands (19 pct). Smokers dropped in Europe from 2002 from 33 pct to 27 pct. Over 80 pct of Europeans want to ban smoking from public places while 56 pct wants to eliminate it from all the restaurants. People who have stopped smoking are 21 pct in the EU-25 with a 30 pct peak of former smokers in Netherlands. Former smokers are only 6 pct in Turkey."
