"Women's rights in Turkey slowly improving
17.03.2005 - 09:51 CET | By Meghan Sapp
Despite the continued obvious inequality between men and women in Turkey, the country is making efforts to change perceptions towards women as it looks to join the EU.

Speaking at a European Parliament public hearing on the status of womens rights in Turkey Wednesday (16 March), the Turkish national governments only female minister, Gdal Aksit, said that her country has united with media, schools, and NGOs in fighting violence against women.

'Turkey is doing everything it can in regards to human rights', said the minister of state.

'The important thing is that women take the place they are entitled to', she said.

Ms Aksit condemned police brutality on 6 March against women demonstrating in Turkey for gender equality.

She said the event was caused by a lack of proper police training adding that three of the officers had been suspended while others may yet be once the investigation is concluded.

Though gender-based inequality is a fact in Turkey, it is not uniform around the country, university professor Dr. Feride Acar told the hearing.

'Turkish migrants in the west and north of Europe demonstrate the worst cases of inequality', said Dr Acar."

There is no reason why Ankara should not want to sign the protocol extending an already existing Turkey-EU association agreement to cover 10 new members, including Cyprus. Turkish officials have repeatedly said that Ankara’s signature will not amount to a recognition of an independent Republic of Cyprus — without drawing any reaction from the major European nations. By signing the protocol, Ankara will be in compliance with the European Council’s demands, while at the same time it will pre-empt the threat of a Cypriot veto of the launching of Turkey’s membership negotiations."

"EU reassures Turkey on talks start
Thu Mar 17, 2005 12:06 PM GMT
ANKARA (Reuters) - The European Commission has reassured Turkey that an EU decision to postpone entry talks with Croatia would not harm Ankara's own chances of starting negotiations on schedule in October.
European Union foreign ministers delayed talks with Croatia on Wednesday because of its failure to arrest a top war crimes suspect -- a decision that sent a powerful signal to other would-be EU members that they must fully respect human rights.
Some Turkish newspapers saw the decision as a warning to Turkey that the start of its own talks would not be automatic.
'The decision on Croatia was taken on merit. There is no connection with the Turkish situation,' said Hansjoerg Kretschmer, the European Commission's envoy to Ankara.
'I don't know when the negotiations with Croatia will begin but a decision has been taken to start negotiations with Turkey on October 3,' he told reporters."

AMBASSADOR EDELMAN: I think the important thing with regard to Syria is that the international community is united behind UN Security Council Resolution 1559, which was co-sponsored by the United States and France, and which calls for the withdrawal of all Syrian forces promptly from Lebanon and the disarming of militias in Lebanon. This is a policy that has international support. When President Bush came to Europe, it was a policy that was endorsed by President Chirac, by Chancellor Schroeder, by the Russian Government, by the Saudi Arabian Government, and by the Egyptian Government, and we continue to believe that that is the best course for stability in the region. We hope that Turkey will also join in that international consensus, in supporting a thorough and immediate Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon. How Turkey wants to reflect the international communitys general position is for Turkey to determine."

Officials reported a sharp rise in the number of insurgents from the Kurdish Workers Party, or PKK. They said at least 2,500 PKK members have entered Turkey from Iraq over the last 18 months in a move that has restored the Kurdish insurgency.

24 - Seasons 1-3
DVD from Fox Home Entertainment
Release date: 14 December, 2004

Fox's hit show '24' took a giant leap into fair and balanced portrayals of Muslim characters in a well-directed episode this week, which featured two secular Muslims who aid Jack Bauer and his rival (romantic) to defend themselves against a gang of mercenaries.
This does much more in creating fair perceptions of Muslims than inane PSAs and balances the central Asian Muslim family in the show, who turn out to be sleeper terrorists, out to destroy the social fabric of their adopted society.
Secularism and Exclusivism have constantly battled it out in Islamic history. Traditionalists define the conflict as that between Islam and polytheism. Modernists have sought to embrace progressive thought, such as Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey."

MAYOR of London Ken Livingstone has banned all tourism advertising of the TRNC from the citys buses, tube trains and other public places under his jurisdiction, reports said yesterday.

According to the reports from London, Livingstone has also been turning down requests from tourism representatives of the Turkish Cypriots and their advertising agency for a meeting to discuss revising the decision taken late last month.

The decision was taken on the basis that the advertisements could cause offence to a large segment of the population. There are around 200,000 Greek Cypriots living in London. The Turkish Cypriot advertisers were notified with an official letter from Livingstones office, saying the decision had not been taken lightly.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation yesterday declined to comment on whether the government had had a hand in lobbying for such a decision.

Over the past several weeks expectations were high that the Shiite bloc would manage to establish a coalition with Kurdish groups and form a new government in Iraq. Particularly over the past week, there were persistent reports that the Shiites and the Kurds had agreed on a power-sharing formula -- with Jalal Talabani of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) becoming president of our neighboring country and prominent Shiite politician Jafaar Ibrahimi heading the new government as prime minister. Addressing the first regular congress of his ruling Justice and Development Partys (AKP) Istanbul Womens Branches over the weekend, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan took the opportunity to reiterate his criticism of certain recent media reports unfavorable to the AKP. Accusing the media groups responsible of deliberately distorting the facts, Erdogan underscored that his party would continue to protect the Turkish peoples interests no matter what these groups say. Stating that no one could call his party either extreme leftist or extreme rightist, as it is strongly committed to serve the interests of the entire nation rather than specific groups, Erdogan also responded to allegations that the AKPs party program and actions follow an extremist agenda. Were serving our nation, the premier stressed. Were trying to establish a sound, strong rule of law in our country."

Looking at the rhetoric of Turkish political and military leaders on Turkey's 'red lines' in Iraq, an outside observer might conclude that Turkey and Iraqi Kurds are on a course of inevitable collision caused by irreconcilable interests. Turkey strongly opposes many Kurdish aspirations, such as the control of Kirkuk within an ethnic federation and eventual independence. The Turkish foreign minister, Abdullah Gul, is due to hold talks with Jack Straw in London today, against a backdrop of widespread European condemnation of excessive force used to break up an International Women's Day demonstration in Istanbul.
The violence caps mounting concern over Turkey's perceived reluctance to push through reforms in the run-up to the start of its EU accession talks this October. The membership negotiations are expected to dominate the meeting between Mr Gul and the British foreign secretary. "

We birds are beginning to worry about concerns being expressed by Brussels that nothing is being done here so that negotiations for Turkey's accession to the EU can start on Oct. 3. Luxembourg's Deputy Foreign Minister the Nicholas Schmidt man, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Presidency, rapped Turkey during an official visit here recently, saying, 'We cannot just lean back and wait for things to happen.' Another senior EU human diplomat said, 'They put everything into Dec. 17 and, like a Marathon runner collapsed at the tape. But they really have done very little since and Erdogan is away all the time.' Furthermore the EU-Turkey troika meeting of human political directors of Feb. 16 confirmed that much remains to be done by Turkey. Consequently, we must reiterate today what we chirped to you from this column on Dec. 20. 'Nothing is certain for Oct. 3 of next year."

'Omigod, I'm so excited.'
'Me too. Omigod.'
'This is going to be so fun.'
'Totally. How long is the flight?'
'I don't know. What is the time difference?'
'I don't know. Eight hours maybe.'
'When's the last time you went there?'
'High school. I think. Do you think anyone on this flight looks like me? It's going to be so weird to be around a lot of people who look like me.'
Emma started laughing. 'Uh, no one here looks like you.'

The Turkish Cypriot who discovered his mother was Greek

"The Turkish Cypriot who discovered his mother was Greek
By Jean Christou

A 45-YEAR-old Turkish Cypriot who went to secure a Cypriot ID card was shocked to discover that his 75-year old Turkish Cypriot mother was in fact a Greek Cypriot living incognito in the north for 50 years.

The story, published yesterday in Politis, came to light when Dogan Mustafa went to secure an ID card and found that the details he had on his mother did not match any official records.

When he returned to the north the same day he asked his mother why there had been no record of her on the Greek Cypriot side. He said by now he had realised that there was something in his mothers past, but he told Politis he could hardly believe what he heard next: My real my name is Vasiliki Charalambous. I am a Greek Cypriot."

The web pages explain how Ex-Im Bank may be able to assist creditworthy Turkish buyers of U.S. goods or services, or U.S. exporters, who may not be able to obtain financing from private sector sources at reasonable commercial terms."
