Advena AVIS
We birds are beginning to worry about concerns being expressed by Brussels that nothing is being done here so that negotiations for Turkey's accession to the EU can start on Oct. 3. Luxembourg's Deputy Foreign Minister the Nicholas Schmidt man, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Presidency, rapped Turkey during an official visit here recently, saying, 'We cannot just lean back and wait for things to happen.' Another senior EU human diplomat said, 'They put everything into Dec. 17 and, like a Marathon runner collapsed at the tape. But they really have done very little since and Erdogan is away all the time.' Furthermore the EU-Turkey troika meeting of human political directors of Feb. 16 confirmed that much remains to be done by Turkey. Consequently, we must reiterate today what we chirped to you from this column on Dec. 20. 'Nothing is certain for Oct. 3 of next year."
