"Turkish journalists demonstrate against penal codeDocument Actions 17/03/2005
About 500 Turkish journalists marched through central Istanbul Thursday, calling on the government to suspend the introduction of a new penal code seen as a threat to freedom of the press. Some of the participants wore handcuffs and covered their mouths with tape, while others wrapped rope around their legs. The demonstrators marched on a symbolic route from the headquarters of the Turkish Journalists' Association to Istanbul's main courthouse and called their protest 'a march to get journalists accustomed to the courthouse road.' The march was organized as part of a campaign by the Turkish media to halt the introduction on April 1 of Turkey's new penal code. "
