Consider this mix: A sense of defeatism combined with a feeling of having been tricked. Put it in the Turkish context -- which is a suspicious, conservative and inward-looking one by nature, anyway -- and you will make some headway in understanding the sharp turn towards the right that this country is now taking.
Let's take the defeatism aspect first. Nothing could have fed this more than the thousands upon thousands who turned up for Nevroz celebrations this year, especially in Diyarbakir, carrying PKK banners and giant posters of the man most vilified by the Turks, namely Abdullah �calan -- the national nemesis. "
