Turkey's Eastern Cities Anxious over Iran Tension

"Turkey's Eastern Cities Anxious over Iran Tension

Turkey’s Eastern Anatolian cities, which have for years been unable to develop due to the terror threat, now face the possible threat of war in Iran.

The threat of possible American military action against Tehran, which insists on not stepping back from its nuclear studies despite intense international pressure, is having a disastrous affect on Turkish cities along the Turkey-Iran border. Commercial activities between Iran and Van, Hakkari and Agri, have remarkably declined following rumors of a possible US military intervention. Officials from the chambers of commerce in Van, Hakkari and Agri and experts told Zaman that the region’s cities, which have long suffered the affects of terror and the Iraq war, had recently started to develop; however, a possible Iran war will end this development process."

Turkey: Going After the Kurds - Newsweek: International Editions - MSNBC.com

"Kurdistan: Dangerous Passage
Turkey embraces 'hot pursuit' in northern Iraq.

Compared with the rest of the country, Iraqi Kurdistan has been a haven of stability—still subject to insurgent bombings, but generally free of the kind of sectarian violence that has racked Baghdad and other major cities in recent weeks. But tensions are rising. Shia militiamen from Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army have begun moving into oil-rich Kirkuk, claimed as part of Kurdistan. In neighboring Iran last month some 10,000 troops attacked PKK-affiliated rebels who defy Tehran's rule in the region. And the Turks have grown increasingly frustrated with the 5,000 guerrillas holed up at Kandil. Over the last two months, the PKK and its political affiliates have stepped up violence inside Turkey to levels not seen in a decade. At least eight government troops were killed in a series of ambushes in Turkey's southeast; two bombs linked to the PKK were planted in Istanbul and, last month, 14 civilians were killed as Kurdish cities all over the southeast erupted in violence."

Tigris dam project stirs hopes, fears in Turkey

"Tigris dam project stirs hopes, fears in Turkey

HASANKEYF: For the people of Hasankeyf, this sleepy, once-mighty town on the banks of the River Tigris is a historic treasure: for those who want to build a massive dam here, it is a backwater in need of development. 'We have to stop the dam, our town will be destroyed,' said Hasankeyf's mayor, Abdulvahap Kusen, a staunch opponent of the Ilisu dam project, which would swallow up more than 80 villages and hamlets by the time of its planned completion in 2013. 'Our valley is part of ancient Mesopotamia, where human history began,' he said. 'When you visit our caves, you get a sense of how people lived millennia ago.' In the sun-baked valley, the minaret of a 14th century mosque soars above a cluster of cottages and tombs. Locals say the waters will rise to the mosque's speakers if the dam-set to be Turkey's second biggest-goes ahead."

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

It's like a warm dip in the Bosporus in the middle of the Prairies. Winnipeg's first hamam, or Turkish bath, has just opened — rather incongruously — at the historic Fort Garry Hotel as part of its new Ten Spa.

Its origins may lie with centuries-old Anatolian steam baths, but the Hamam at Ten is a modern facility — spotlessly clean, co-ed and very much a public experience. Small groups can book the entire facility, and the hamam has designated male- and female-only times. I visited on a quiet Wednesday, so I had the place and the lone attendant all to myself."

A court on Friday began retrying an Islamic militant accused of attempting to overthrow Turkey's secular regime and planning to crash a plane into the mausoleum of the founder of modern Turkey, a lawyer said.

Metin Kaplan, who was extradited from Germany, was last year sentenced to life in prison for attempting 'to overturn the constitutional order'--a charge that amounts to treason. But an appeals court overturned that decision in November, saying the investigation was insufficient and there were procedural errors in the first trial."

When it comes to Armenia , Turkey has always told a different story.
Many Turks believe that the current push to have the world recognize the Armenian genocide is an attempt to force Turkey to pay reparations and to annex the eastern part of the country to present-day Armenia.
According to Turkish literature, the estimate of 1.5 million Armenian deaths is exaggerated. Instead the Turks claim 700,000 Armenians were killed or died of starvation and disease during World War I in eastern Anatolia."

The Muslim News - Turkish Muslims in Germany: At the centre or at the periphery? by Talip Küçükcan

Turks in Germany are no longer transitory gastarbeiter (guestworker) people, but de facto settlers in Germany, despite the dominant official political discourse, which constantly reiterates that Germany is not a country of immigration. The parameters of this political discourse are based on an ethnocentric interpretation of citizenship and nationhood in Germany, which emphasises ‘volknation’, a cultural nation, and leads to the political exclusion of ethnic minorities.

Germany hosts the largest number of immigrants than any other country in Western Europe. There were more than 5.2 million foreigners living in Germany in 1990, rising to 6.8 million in 1993. By the end of 2000, the Federal Interior Ministry announced that 7.37 million foreigners were living in Germany. This constitutes 9 per cent of the total population. The largest group of foreigners is the Turks, with 2.11 million people, comprising the largest group of foreigners living in Germany today, which account for 28.0 percent of all resident foreigners.

The Middle East Media Research Institute - US does not trust Turkish AKP Government

The American-Turkish Council's annual conference, which took place in Washington, D.C. in late March 2006, reflected the current chill in Turkish-U.S. relations. While in previous years this conference was always attended by leading Turkish and U.S. government figures, businessmen, and military figures, this year it was marked by sparse participation. Most of the Turkish officials in attendance told the press that Turkish-U.S. relations were in much worse shape than they had previously believed.

Two emissaries sent by Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan on a fence-mending mission to Washington following the ATC conference also failed in their mission. The emissaries, PM Erdogan's personal advisor Cuneyt Zapsu and AKP Party Deputy Chairman and MP Saban Disli, came under fire from senior U.S. officials with whom they met on April 7, 2006 at the American Enterprise Institute. During the meeting, the U.S. officials expressed their anger regarding several issues: the AKP government's unpredictable policies, Turkey's February 2006 hosting of a Hamas delegation, and the release of the anti-American and antisemitic Turkish film Valley of the Wolves - Iraq, which had the endorsement of high level AKP figures at the level of the wife of the PM, cabinet ministers, the parliamentary speaker, and other dignitaries who attended the film's festive opening gala.

Despite 50 years of strategic Turkey-U.S. alliance, ever since the AKP came to power Turkish polls have shown continued erosion of these relations. A recent study found that the vast majority of Turks harbor anti-American sentiment and see the U.S. as a major threat to Turkey.

In the last few weeks, the people living in the Kurdish cities of Turkey showed a determined resistance and civil uprising. Starting in Diyarbakir, the uprising spread to other cities including Batman, Siirt, Mardin, Kiziltepe, Nusaybin, Hakkari, Agri, Van, Ergani, Kars, and Istanbul. Kurds took to the streets to voice their demands and defended themselves against police attacks by throwing stones and firebombs. The clashes started with the killing of 14 HPG (People’s Defensive Forces of Kurdish Liberation Movement (KLM)) guerrilla fighters. The HPG claimed that chemical weapons had been used against the guerrillas and demanded that NGOs should investigate the incidence. The families of the guerrillas said that they saw burns and other signs of chemical weapons on their corpses. This information triggered large-scale demonstrations in Diyarbakir during the funeral. The police attacked the funeral using firearms. The demonstrations to protest the attack and the use of chemical weapons spread to other cities. During the demonstrations 13 people, including three children aged three to six, were killed by bullets and several people were hospitalised.

26 April 2006

Condoleezza Rice's visit to Ankara aroused excitement in the Turkish public. What is behind it? What will she ask for in Ankara? What's cooking?

These are not natural questions to be asked in a transparent system. If such questions are asked as they have been asked in Turkey, then, despite Turkey being relatively the most -- if not the only -- democratic Muslim country in the region, it still lacks a sufficient degree of transparency. Or, that means there is not much public confidence in its authorities, since a visit of a very high official of an allied country could easily resonate as if something is cooking invisibly, behind the curtains."

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sought to reassure Turkish leaders during her April 25-26 visit to Ankara that deepening chaos in Iraq can be contained. Though still wary about developments in Iraq, Turkish leaders appear eager to encourage closer US-Turkish relations.

Turkey is concerned that militants of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) are using northern Iraq as a sanctuary and training ground for a renewed campaign to carve out areas in southeastern Turkey as a Kurdish homeland. Turkish military leaders recently announced that 40,000 troops would reinforce the estimated 250,000 soldiers already deployed in southeastern Turkey as a deterrent to PKK incursions from northern Iraq."

It is a sad reminder that the Reconciliation Commission composed of Turkish and Armenian former diplomats, academics and intellectuals who started a much-needed dialogue between the two sides on an informal basis and at the level of civil society, now seems deadlocked and somewhat failed. It was a courageous and timely venture, a worthy initiative of 10 wise men from both sides under the auspices of the Henry Dunnan Center for Humanitarian Dialogue. They, unfortunately, did not make much headway, even in search of joint projects to cover business, tourism, culture, education and, most importantly, confidence building measures between Turkey and Armenia. "The stance of a democratic society against terrorism: Turkey’s approach
Dr. Ibrahim Cerrah

Abstract

Regardless of the threat level that terrorism generates to the state and society in democratic systems, terrorism must be considered an internal threat. Terrorists should not be viewed as an outside enemy to be destroyed; instead, they must be perceived as citizens who are criminals of the respective country, and the fight against terrorism has to be carried out accordingly. The concept of ‘war against terror’ can only be used metaphorically. In real terms, terror has to be solved by specific counter-terrorist methods, not by a whole range of war."

April 24, 2006

Today, we remember one of the horrible tragedies of the 20th century -- the mass killings and forced exile of as many as 1.5 million Armenians in the final days of the Ottoman Empire in 1915. This was a tragedy for all humanity and one that we and the world must never forget.

We mourn this terrible chapter of history and recognize that it remains a source of pain for people in Armenia and for all those who believe in freedom, tolerance, and the dignity and value of every human life. It is a credit to the human spirit and generations of Armenians who live in Armenia, America, and around the globe that they have overcome this suffering and proudly preserved their centuries-old culture, traditions, and religion."

"Not much to celebrate on April 24

YESTERDAY the Turkish Cypriots marked the second anniversary of the Annan plan referendum with celebrations, under the title of ‘Yes Day’. It is difficult to understand what the point of the celebrations was, considering that the plan was emphatically rejected by the Greek Cypriots and the re-unification which the Turkish Cypriots had voted for was never achieved.

We can only deduce that they were celebrating a diplomatic victory that enabled the Turkish side to win the sympathy of the international community which, since the referendum, has come to view the Cyprus government as the obstacle to a settlement."

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives;
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours.
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

THESE powerful words from Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk go some way to understanding just why it is that Australians continue to remember a legend that actually began with a humiliating defeat."
