"Towards Turkish membership of the EU

Turkey has taken an important step towards EU membership, with the announcement that it will reform the law against ‘insulting Turkishness’. This will probably involve bringing the law into line with the European Court of Human Rights. This move demonstrates why Turkey should be brought into the EU; the prize of EU membership provides an incentive for the Turkish government to continue on its liberal, democratic path. The reform is motivated by concern for Turkey’s image in Europe, after Nobel prize-winner Orhan Pamuk was prosecuted for insulting Turkishness."
