"Turkey rejects EU pressure on Cyprus, delay in talks date 01/12/2004
Turkey will not bow to pressure from the European Union to recognize Cyprus and expects the 25-nation bloc to open accession talks with Ankara next year, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday. EU leaders are expected to agree at a December 16-17 summit to begin membership negotiations with Ankara, but according to a first draft of the summit's conclusion, they will set some tough conditions. One of the conditions for joining the bloc is for Ankara to formally recognize the EU-member Greek Cypriot government in the south of the divided island. "
