"Hungarian PM: Turkey must recognise Cyprus before starting talks with EUDocument Actions 07/02/2005
Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said Monday that Turkey should recognise Cyprus before Ankara starts accession talks to join the European Union. 'Hungary supports the common European approach that Turkey de facto recognise the Republic of Cyprus before starting accession negotiations with the EU in October,' Gyurcsany told a press conference in Budapest after meeting Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos. 'We support the process of peaceful reunification of Cyprus,' Gyurcsany added. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey seized the north in response to an Athens-engineered coup in Nicosia aimed at uniting the island with Greece. "
