"We should welcome Talat's triumph
MEHMET ALI TALAT and his Republican Turkish Party (CTP) were the undisputed winners of Sundays parliamentary elections in the north. The CTP increased its share of the vote by nine percentage points and took almost half of the assemblys 50 seats. He could, realistically, form a minority government without entering a coalition with another party, even though it is more than likely he will form an alliance that will guarantee him a working majority.
His comfortable victory underlined the desire of the majority of Turkish Cypriots for a settlement that would re-unify the island, as opposed to the two-state solution that Dervis Eroglus UBP stood for. Talat has always been committed to re-unification, despite the efforts of the Cyprus government to present him as a new Denktash and as Ankaras puppet hell-bent on partitioning the island. These crude accusations may work domestically, but outside Cyprus nobody takes them seriously."
