Some 49 police officials, who mostly carried out a recent corruption operation that embarrased the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, were de facto kept under police gaze in the lobby of the İstanbul courthouse without a proper detention order -- a scandal that many branded as an unprecedented botched attempt by prosecutors to try the policemen in this highly politicized inquiry.
