In 1949, Turkey was one of the world's first nations to recognize the state of Israel and thereafter developed strong economic and military ties with the Jewish state. However, events over the last two years such as the 2008-2009 war in Gaza and the recent Gaza Flotilla Raid, which killed nine Turkish activists, have caused the relationship to deteriorate."
