To the Editor: When I read “Istanbul’s Beat Is International” (May 11), I said to myself, no wonder. We can justify the new Turkish sound, as you refer to it, by the type of rock club/brewery/basement music joint I visited in December 2007. I was invited for a night out by two young Istanbul locals and we wound up at Balans, the kind of place where the entrance is a back door in an alley."
