BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's drive to get his country into the European Union won strong backing from top EU officials Friday, a week before the bloc's leaders decide whether to open membership talks.
After meeting with EU leaders, Erdogan insisted his country deserved union membership, expressing confidence that bloc leaders would decide next week to open membership talks with his nation.
