Cyprus, the new kid on the block, is playing a risky gambit by threatening to spoil Turkey's long-awaited EU membership bid unless it receives key concessions from Ankara in return. European Union leaders will decide on December 17 whether to give Turkey a date for starting accession talks. Cyprus says it will only show its hand at the eleventh hour, and will accept nothing less than recognition from Turkey in exchange for a 'yes' vote. Analysts say Cyprus' high-stakes diplomacy could prove disastrous, as Turkey is steadfastly unwilling to even contemplate the recognition issue until after it secures a date. "
