In just one week of 2004, Cyprus changed forever by joining the European Union and rejecting a UN blueprint to reunify the divided island -- two of the most significant events in its 44 years of independence. 'Joining the EU was extremely important, it changed things politically, economically and our everyday lives. There is no going back,' says research analyst Pambos Papageorgiou. Becoming one of 10 countries to enter an enlarged EU bloc on May 1 was seen as Cyprus' biggest achievement since gaining independence from Britain in 1960. "
