The proportion of Turks who are below the age of 22 has dropped by 10 percent over the last 15 years, according to State Institute of Statistics (DİE) figures, gradually transforming the country in a fundamental way.

Based on DİE data, people below the age of 22 constituted around half of the population in 1990 but was calculated to be 40 percent in 2005. According to projections this figure will drop even further, to 38 percent in 2010.

Turkey's population was 56.15 million in 1990, increasing by 15.9 million to 72.05 million in 2005."
