The year 2005 has been testing for Ankara’s ambition to join the European Union, primarily because, as Olli Rehn, EU enlargement Commissioner says, “the pace of change has slowed” in Turkey itself.
Next year could be still more difficult, primarily because of an unresolved dispute over Cypriot ships and the impending trial of novelist Orhan Pamuk, both of which will affect some of the basic principles of the accession process."
