The gates of the European Union were never half open for Turkey, but now they seem to be half closed following the �no� vote on the draft EU constitution in France and the Netherlands, although this had 'nothing to do' with Turkey. This fact of life may be more true than real, especially seeing how powerful and crucial Turkey's candidacy is, not only for now but for the next decade or so -- for the future of the EU. All diplomatic utterances to the contrary were deceptive and self-deluding, said in order to save the moment, for understandable political reasons. "
