The need to assist and to welcome Ankara
Bombings never go unnoticed, but the explosions on the streets and beaches of southeast Turkey this summer have not been noticed widely enough. Blamed on groups associated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (the PKK), the attacks in the resort of Kusadasi and elsewhere have killed at least seven civilians, including one Briton, and injured dozens more. They have destroyed hopes of restoring a five-year ceasefire that ended last year, triggered deadly reprisals by Turkish troops and induced the Government in Ankara to threaten cross-border raids into northern Iraq if more is not done, by the US in particular, to apprehend Kurdish rebel leaders based there."
