Turkish Ambassador Irfan Acar: Ankara is sparing no effort in helping to resolve Mideastern conflicts

"Turkish Ambassador Irfan Acar: Ankara is sparing no effort in helping to resolve Mideastern conflicts

The Turkish envoy to Lebanon, Irfan Acar, has stressed his governments efforts to contribute to settling conflicts in the region. As regards Iraq, Turkey attaches great importance to the restoration of peace and stability there as well as to the preservation of the countrys unity and territorial integrity Iraq is a neighbor of Turkey and we attach great importance to the Process of Neighboring Countries, to which we belong and which we believe is an excellent forum to discuss issues related to Iraq and the region. Noting that the Palestinian issue is the core of the problems in the Middle East, the ambassador pointed out that Turkey has for long advocated a peaceful settlement of this issue in line with the relevant UN resolutions Having good relations with all the parties involved, we hope that a just and permanent settlement can be found on a two-state basis, and that peace and stability can be restored. The ambassador regretted that the plan proposed last year by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to resolve the dispute in the divided island of Cyprus was rejected by the Greek Cypriots although it was accepted by the Turkish Cypriots. But he indicated that Turkey maintains its policy of a peaceful and just settlement on the island and will continue its efforts to this end."
