"Turkish EPP envoy says EU is harming trust
17.06.2005 - 00:48 CET | By Andrew Rettman EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU risks harming Turkish goodwill if it gives in to French and German pressure to abandon enlargement, but Ankara is prepared to play the long-term game with Brussels no matter what, a senior Turkish politician told EUobserver.

'European leaders should make up their minds about the value of the Turkish contribution to Europe and then fulfil what they promised 40 years ago or they will create problems for the continuity of this project', the vice-chairman of Turkey's ruling AKP party, Saban Disli has said.

The remarks followed his visit to the European centre-right (EPP) leaders' conference in Brussels on Thursday (16 June).

The AKP has observer status in the EPP, but the Turkish politician said that EPP president Wilfried Martens has promised to boost it to affiliate level next year. "
