The Turkish outlook towards life-threatening diseases and events can be observed in the way they behave in everyday traffic.

When Turks were confronted with AIDS in mid-'80s, most believed it was a first-world illness that affected homosexuals in particular, as did most of the world. As the disease gradually made itself felt, especially in large cities and the Black Sea region, Turks who were asked if they feared infection said they were Turks and that the disease would not affect them."
