ANKARA — Ankara on Monday said it had never authorised a shipment of weapons which authorities in Yemen seized at the weekend and is believed to have originated in Turkey.

After President Amadinejad of Iran and Iran's theocratic Islamist state, the greatest threat to Israel is Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and Turkey's Islamist government. What Does Tomorrow's Election Mean for Turkey-US Relations?
November 5, 2012 - 4:24pm, by Yigal Schleifer
American President Barack Obama and his challenger, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, have been spending this election season working hard to portray themselves as each representing a starkly different choice for American voters. But as the October 22 debate in Florida between the two candidates made clear, when it comes to foreign policy issues, Obama and Romney are not really that different. During the debate, Romney frequently agreed with positions that the Obama administration has taken on many key foreign policy issues, or offered only mild criticism on others, leaving very little distance between the two.

Erdogan and Merkel: Almost Auf Wiedersehen
Last week brought some seemingly good news for Turkey’s long moribund effort to join the European Union. At a joint press conference in Berlin with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that “The EU is an honest negotiating partner” and that Brussels would pursue Turkey’s membership in “good faith.” In a way, there was reason for Turks to celebrate Merkel’s forward leaning statements. Both she and former French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, have been the most vocal and public proponents of what they call a “privileged partnership” for Turkey in lieu of full EU membership, which is a nice way of saying the status quo. Merkel’s willingness to energize the accession process is no doubt more apparent than real, however. European opposition to Turkey’s membership in one of the world’s most exclusive clubs is pretty wide and deep even among European leaders who give lip service to the notion.

Fazil Say, tweeting on freedom of religion issues may be an infringement of the Turkish penal code
Once again international attention has been focused on the freedom of expression in Turkey. In the wake of the high-profile cases against Nobel prizewinner Orhan Pamuk and novelist Elif Şafak, the turn has now come to concert pianist Fazıl Say, who is accused of violating Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code. This article stipulates that any person who openly denigrates the religious beliefs of a group shall be punished with imprisonment from six months to one year if the act is conducive to a breach of the public peace. Furthermore, if this crime is committed through the media, the penalty will be increased by one half.
