Pity the ‘democrats’ of Turkey

I always thought that supporting the demands for freedom from Turkey’s Islamists and standing up against the rigid regime of secularism was the right thing to do. This regime tried to resist even after the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power with a majority of the votes in 2002 – that’s why it was the right thing to stand by the AKP, against all sorts of intrusions, military as well as civilian ones.

McCurdy: Pressure Must Be Exerted On Armenia To Establish A Joint Commission Of Historians
Sunday, 05 February 2012 13:20

Interview with Lincoln McCurdy, the president of Turkish Coalition of America (TCA)

- What are your views on Armenia’s negative insistence on international community as the French Senate recently passed the bill penalizing the denial of the so-called genocides recognized by the law?

- This bill criminalizes speech by mandating the categorical acceptance of a historical narrative. It goes beyond expressing support for a one-sided narrative of the Ottoman Armenian tragedy, and would effectively censor any viewpoint that differs from how a political body, the French Parliament, reads and interprets this history and defines it - although it lacks the legal or legitimate authority to do so. It is an onslaught on academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, freedom of thought and freedom of speech. This is antithetical to the impartial pursuit of the truth.

How has the Arab Spring affected Turkey? What is the Turkish government's stand on the revolution currently engulfing the Middle East?

The ongoing transformation in the region emerged and developed as a consequence of the aspirations of the local people. They basically call for transparency, rule of law, political participation, freedom, constitutional reforms and better economic opportunities. From the very beginning, the Turkish Government encouraged the leaders of the countries in question to listen to the voice of their people and respect their demands. We are contributing and determined to contribute more to these countries' efforts to come out of transitional period by achieving their ambitions on the basis of social consensus.

There have been Chinese detectives, women detectives, friar detectives and Indian detectives. When I read the first of the Yashim series, The Janissary Tree, I discovered that Jason Goodwin added another kind to the list — a eunuch detective and made a bold statement in the detective genre by breaking a new ground. Detective novels have been set in Istanbul before too but I don’t think any of their heroes have been quite like Yashim Togalu, a eunuch, both brilliant and near-invisible in the fast-changing world of the Ottoman Empire in 1836. A person who can shift from the inner quarters of the harem to the outer world because he has been given immunity status by the Sultan.

The Armenian claims have been discussed in the French Parliament since 1975 (rejected in 1975, 1985, 1987 and 1996, adopted in 1998-2001), but clearly, the discussions and the vote never became so far. What has happened since December could appropriately be called a culmination of stupidity. One senator, Sophie Joissains (UMP), elected from Bouches-du-Rhône, the county with the most vituperative Armenian community of France, even regretted in her statement that the Treaty of Sèvres was never carried out. On the other hand, if in the National Assembly chairman of the Franco-Turkish Friendship group Michel Diefenbacher was a bit alone in maintaining honor by his good speech delivered against the Boyer bill, a significant number of MPs fought the text fiercely in the Senate, accumulating motions of dismissal, amendments of cancellation and speeches to defend their position.

Bad weather: floods inundate Syria refugee camps in Turkey

02 February, 12:38

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA, FEBRUARY 2 - Temporary refugee camps in Turkey's Hatay province have experienced severe floods after Syria opened the floodgates of a dam further upstream on the River Asi, as Turkish Cihan news agency reports. Around 9,000 Syrian refugees who have fled ongoing violence at home remain in the temporary tent cities. For the last 15 days heavy rain has continued in Hatay, although freezing conditions and snow are now setting in. The increase in water runoff has caused the already swollen River Asi to burst its banks.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is pretty indirect

By Mark Harris, February 2, 2012

Starring Muhammet Uzuner, Taner Birsel, and Yilmaz Erdogan. In Turkish with English subtitles.

Ever since L’Avventura divided audiences at Cannes more than 50 years ago, cutting-edge cinema has been characterized by formal complexity. Immensely fond of extended takes, tricky sequence shots, undemonstrative acting, and narrative minimalism, the less successful of these films can fairly—if uncharitably—be described as long, slow, and boring. On the other hand, when this difficult formula actually works, the end result can be so splendid it provides the viewer with a radically new apprehension of the world.

How Istanbul Became One of Europe's Safest Cities

David Lepeska

Political observers have recently been trumpeting the Turkish Model, citing Turkey's democracy, its open-minded Islamists and economic zip as an example to newly liberated Arab nations and other Muslim countries.

In the 18th century, however, its capital presented a less positive model. The Istanbul of that era – with waves of migrants, an underclass of servants and unskilled laborers, overburdened housing stock, dirty slums abutting elegant mansions, high levels of petty and violent crime – looked much like Dickensian London.
