Roots of Kurdish conflict

The Kurdish conflict began in August 1984, as members of the Kurdistan Workers party, or PKK, mounted attacks in Turkey’s southeast.

The 1980s and 1990s were the bloodiest years, but more than 500 people died last year, the highest total since PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan was captured in 1999.
