Criticism grows over Ankara’s curbs on society

Moves by the Turkish government have sparked concern that the state is exerting ever-greater sway over other parts of society, ranging from academia to business.

This year, Turkey has put independent regulators under the supervision of government departments, asserted new powers to appoint members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences and increased control over the Istanbul Stock Exchange as a possible prelude to privatisation. On Tuesday, Ankara introduced new internet filters that the government claims will protect children from damaging content. The state has set out different rationales in each case. But critics – and even some sympathisers – are alarmed.
