"Plan to bring old Nicosia back to life

A NEW action plan aimed at reviving the centre of Nicosia was announced yesterday by Interior Minister Andreas Christou. The plan aims to restore both sides of the old capital, on either side of the Green Line and will be implemented over three years, starting in 2006, Christou said after meeting with Nicosia mayor, Michalakis Zampelas.
When the main work gets underway next year, 13 new projects will include revamping Eleftheria Square, GSP Stadium Square, Evagoras Avenue and Solomou Square. The pedestrian path along the banks of the Pedieos river will be modernised and new bicycle routes will be introduced to the area.
�Nicosia Municipality and the state need to intervene with listed buildings in the old capital and the overall problem of keeping the charm of the old town within the walls, with various measures, incentives and interventions�, said Christou.
Zampelas spoke of the importance of the old capital, which he described as the �heart of both Nicosia and Cyprus�, and thanked the minister for his interest in the restoration."
