"Letters: Turkey and Europe
Saturday, November 6, 2004
Ian Bremmer is wrong about Turkey ('Would Turkey split the EU and the U.S.?' Views, Oct. 22). Turkey's admission to the European Union would not 'drive a wedge' or 'make permanent a rift' in trans-Atlantic relations, as the author asserts. Turkey, through its membership in the EU, is more likely to have a healing effect on trans-Atlantic relations.
Because of its location, history and socioeconomic composition, Turkey would bring added value to and enhance the quality of debate and policy-making in the trans-Atlantic community. Turkey has the capacity to act as a catalyst or a facilitator whenever the United States and the EU differ on the challenges of our times."
