BERLIN (Reuters) - German conservatives risk hurting relations between Turkey and the European Union with their opposition to Ankara's drive for full EU membership, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying on Saturday.
Germany's opposition Christian Democrats (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), widely forecast to take power after an early election expected in September, have consistently opposed full EU membership for Turkey, proposing instead what they call a 'privileged partnership'.
That proposal, which would offer Turkey close links to the EU without all the benefits of full membership, has been firmly rejected by Ankara."
