"TURKEY: ERDOGAN TO REKINDLE U.S. TIES
Instanbul, 6 June (AKI) - Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to start on Tuesday a three-day visit to the US, whose centrepiece will be his meeting with US president George W. Bush. The visit is widely regarded as a bid by Washington and Ankara to restore a previously close relationship strained by the conflict in Iraq. The last time Erdogan met Bush was at the 2004 NATO summit in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
The Iraqi situation and Turkeys close ties with Syria, which Washington brands a 'rogue state' are expected to top the agenda when Erdogan and Bush meet on Wednesday. Other topics are expected to include Turkeys bid to join the European Union, which Washington supports, and the issue of Ankara's recognition of Cyprus."
