Turkey would provide what looks to many Europeans like an unlimited supply of immigrants. The United States has constantly pressured Europe to take in Turkey, as if to subcontract to the EU the costs and risks of managing and integrating Turkey. European elites resisted for a long time but in recent years have promised to proceed with Turkish membership.
To his credit, the wise, old former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, grandfather of the euro and the head of the constitutional convention, was against Turkish membership."
