"'Beyond the Bosporus'
Istanbul is the only city in the world which straddles two continents: between Thrace (Europe) and Anatolia (Asia Asian Minor) across the Bosporus Strait.
The strait has been an important waterway since antiquity. The Black Sea lies to its North, and - to its South - the Sea of Marmara, with the Dardanelles Strait forming a gateway into the Aegean Sea in the eastern Mediterranean.
At present, the strait is spanned by two road-bridges.
A project to cross the Bosporus Strait (Bogazici) by rail tunnel has been under planning for some years In the face of public dissent, plans for a third road-bridge - to relieve mounting congestion - have been suspended. "
