The recent visit by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan to Israel highlighted both countries shared commitment to modernization and democracy, a pro-Western orientation, growing economic exchange and the perception of Syria and Iran as destabilizing elements in the region. Although there has been a growth of political Islam, a decline in the political power of the army, and the deterioration of Israeli-Palestinian relationships, Turkey�s basic relationship framework towards Israel has remained stable. Turkey�s participation in the EU could sway its traditional alliance with Israel to a more typically European stance."
