Turkey Stumbles, But Washington Pushed
By Gregory R. Copley | Sun, 21 October 2012 00:00 | 1
The mid-October 2012 Turkish interception of an alleged Syrian military shipment was intended to build momentum for the case to intervene in Syria. But it backfired, and may have damaged US-Turkish trust, and given the upper hand to Moscow.
Turkey’s interception on October 10, 2012, of a Syrian Air A320 transport aircraft, allegedly carrying key air defense radar equipment for Syria from Russia, was initially portrayed as a major intelligence coup by Turkey and an indicator that Syria’s and Iran’s air defense networks had been seriously weakened. However, highly-placed sources in Ankara, Moscow, and Damascus have confirmed to GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs that the reporting on the issue was Turkish disinformation, but, more importantly, that it may have been a direct result of US pressure to intercept the aircraft and force it to land at Ankara’s Esenboga airport.
In fact the aircraft was not carrying air defense radar equipment or military cargo.

Turkey's Gold Rush: Is Istanbul's New Skyline A Boom or a Bubble?

Kemal Ataturk built Turkey's first railway in 1927. A new tunnel is being dug under the Bosporus.
With the windows on its towering blocks half-fitted and steel girders exposed, downtown Istanbul's Zorlu Center appears to be just another construction site. But step inside the sales office and the illusion begins. An elegant hostess walks you down carpeted corridors to a lounge where water trickles soothingly across a fake granite wall. Giant screens play 3-D trailers of the good life on offer at Istanbul's latest hot property, from indoor pools to artfully placed orchids.

ISTANBUL—Suzan Sabanci Dinçer, chairman of Turkey's Akbank T.A.S., has banking in her blood. She also has an unyielding faith in the potential of Turkey's economy.
Perhaps that comes naturally to Ms. Sabanci Dinçer, a scion of one of Turkey's most famous business dynasties, who says Akbank, the country's second-largest lender by market value, sees its fate intertwined with that of its homeland.

Highly effective ways of self-help books in Turkey
Emrah Güler ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
The self-help and personal development genre finds its way into Turkey’s publishing world around the same time it has been gained momentum in the West. Emulating the economic practices, liberal policies and lifestyles in the West during the 1980s, Turkey has gone through drastic changes. A new middle class with Western sensibilities has been kick started.
A recent Turkish movie playing in theaters follows the adventures of a hapless guy trying desperately to better his luck to no avail. In Kamil Çetin’s “Oğlum Bak Git” (Dude, Move It), protagonist Orhan finds the ultimate solution to finding happiness and luck in consulting a self-help guru.

Armenia and Turkey: Let us be Friends for Once
Commentary — By Milena Abrahamyan on October 21, 2012 9:00 am
The conflict, if it can be called that, between Turkey and Armenia, is an unusual one. It is more like a 100-year-old post-conflict that has been locked up and forgotten, at least on the Turkish side of the border. In Armenia it is much more difficult to ignore the real effects of that contested history. Inasmuch as this “post-conflict” has to do with the early 20th century Ottoman policy of extermination of non-Muslim minorities within Turkey, including the genocide of Armenians living there before 1915, it has also evolved to include the interests of more powerful countries. The presence of U.S. military bases in Turkey and Russian military bases in Armenia is no coincidence. The issue is further complicated by Turkish alliance with Azerbaijan regarding the Nagorno-Karabagh war.

Turkey seeks more destination-right for its airlines
Sunday Oct 21, 2012
New Delhi, Oct 21 — India should allow more travel and destination rights to Turkish Airlines to promote tourism, trade and people-to-people contact, the Turkish envoy here has said.
"Last year we had just 70,000 tourists from India, while Turkish tourists were even less bilaterally. One of the main reasons that hinders the growth of tourism between the two countries is air connectivity," Turkish envoy to India Burak Akcapar said.
