The Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem has denied claims by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that "the world's wealthiest Jew" was sent to him in an attempt to mediate between Israel and Turkey. Erdogan told a Turkish TV station that the emissary was sent and that all attempts to mediate between Israel and Turkey have failed, and will continue to fail until Israel apologizes for the death of nine Turkish activists aboard the Marmara who were killed by IDF commandoes when they attempted to break the Gaza blockade in May 2010.

Not long after the Arab Spring began, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, then an ally, that he had to reform. After months, as the Syrian revolution continued and there was no sign of reform, Erdogan called for Assad to step down. Erdogan has allowed the Syrian opposition to make its base in Turkey and has remained in the forefront of the fight for regime change. The Washington Post’s Lally Weymouth spoke with Erdogan in Ankara on Tuesday. Excerpts:

Bewildering Odatv trial continues in Istanbul
By Özgür Öğret and Nina Ognianova/CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Staff
In Istanbul, the trial of several suspects in the case of Odatv, an ultranationalist website harshly critical of the government, continues to great consternation. When the case began in early 2011, a dozen journalists were charged, 10 of whom were incarcerated. The prosecution said Odatv staffers, along with prominent investigative reporters Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener, were involved in the alleged Ergenekon plot--a supposed large-scale conspiracy to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Turkey's EU Minister Says Membership Still Top Priority
Turkey's European Union Minister Egemen Bagis has said joining the European club was still a top priority for his country as a source of stability both regionally and globally. "Just because our EU process is less visible doesn't mean it is less important. No need to discover America all over again. EU is the address for advanced democratic standards in Turkey," Bagis told The Anadolu Agency in Lisbon.
Bagis said Turks were not opposed to "the idea of the European Union but to its double standards" adding that it was the credibility of the EU the Turkish people were sceptical of, "not the EU reform process itself."

Apart from the continuous Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, there is Iran’s nuclear program, with the relations between Iran and Azerbaijan aggravating pro rata mounting international sanctions against Tehran.
