Across the Green Line, northern Cyprus beckons with Ottoman relics

Less than an hour after landing at Larnaka's shiny new airport, I'm trailing in the wake of a man with a clipboard who's galloping towards the car park. My family and I have arrived in the Republic of Cyprus but we're not stopping to walk in the Troödos mountains or admire the archaeological delights of Pafos; no, we're heading north, to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The man dead ahead is our taxi driver who's going to take us through the UN-controlled border area, expedite the paperwork and unite us with our hire car.

Why Turkey's women and children directive is good for football

There are three things I vividly recall about the first football match I attended without an adult chaperone. It was sometime around 1980 at Muirton Park, watching St Johnstone take on Airdrieonians. My first memory was paying the junior admission fee, an extortionate £1.70, which I'd scraped together from my piggy bank in silver and coppers. As the man in the box counted with mounting annoyance, a couple of older kids ran behind me and hurdled the barrier, leading to an embarrassing accusation that I was a professional decoy.

Turkish police are looking into what they claim is a “Russian trail” in the murder of Chechens in Istanbul. A police spokesman has told reporters that a Russian killer whose last name was claimed to be Zhirkov shot dead Chechen nationals in the center of Istanbul a week ago. There has been no official comment from Moscow so far. Meanwhile, some analysts slammed the statement as irresponsible. Others say that this is a provocation against Russia.

Since their highly successful IPO in May this year when Yandex’s shares increased in value 55% on day one and raised $1.3 billion, the speculation (especially from me) has not been when the company would launch into new markets — but which and when. This week Yandex finally put us out of our misery by launching into Turkey.

Turkey's foreign policy hits a dead end
By Mahan Abedin

As Turkey intensifies its efforts to influence the trajectory of the Arab Spring, the sharp rebuke by the leaders of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to suggestions by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Egypt adopt a "secular state", is a carefully calculated statement and may well mark the limits of Turkish influence in the Arab world.

After consolidating its domestic political position with an impressive third straight victoryin the 2011 parliamentary elections, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) is poised to cement Turkey’s status as the prime indigenous power in the Middle East. As mass protests rock most of the region, including Israel, Turkey is increasingly holding itself up as an example of economic dynamism and democratic stability. The Arab Spring’s greatest beneficiary is neither Iran nor the United States nor Israel. Thanks to its creative foreign policy, burnished international image, and assertive political rhetoric, Turkey is arguably the biggest winner coming out of the Arab uprisings.
