To meet Turkey’s projected 6-8 per cent future increase in electricity demand, the Turkish government is planning to install smart grid projects and partner that with 30 per cent clean generation capacity by 2023.
Michael Lally, commercial counsellor from the US Embassy in Turkey, said: “Turkey remains largely dependent on imported gas. The country’s only significant source of domestic power is lignite coal, which is increasingly rejected due to environmental concerns.”

Amnesty International pushes for much-needed protections in new constitution — and you can help
The upheavals of autocratic governments that started in North Africa and spread eastward into Asia have been — and are still being — well documented.
One nation about which we have heard less is Turkey. But that may soon change.
On July 29 The New York Times reported: “Turkey’s top military commanders resigned en masse on Friday.” This is perhaps the most surprising event since Gen. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk assumed power in 1923 and began converting Turkey into a secular state. Politicos quoted in the Times suggested the mass resignation was a last-ditch effort by the military to regain the power it has lost over recent years. Most thought the generals’ Hail Mary pass would fail.

Turkey’s tough talk on Syria is unlikely to be matched by action

Erdogan and Assad in happier days
IN A small café outside Istanbul’s Fatih mosque, a slight bearded man lifts his shirt to reveal two deep bullet wounds. “Assad’s soldiers did this to me,” says Motee Albatee, who served as an imam at a Sunni mosque in the besieged Syrian town of Deraa until he fled the country several weeks ago. Mr Albatee is among a growing number of Syrian dissidents who have found sanctuary in Turkey, many of them in refugee camps near the border. Some are angry over the reluctance of Turkey’s government to get tougher with Bashar Assad, Syria’s president. “Turkey must set up a buffer zone [inside Syria]” to protect more refugees from the fighting, insists Yayha Bedir, a member of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. Like many seated around the table, he believes only drastic action will force the Syrian army to defect en masse, bringing down Mr Assad’s brutal regime.
