Political risks in Turkey appear to have toned down-RBS

"Political risks in Turkey appear to have toned down-RBS

We visited Istanbul and Ankara on May 16-19 meeting with officials from the Treasury, the IMF, the World Bank, plus a range of diplomats, Turkish corporates (white goods, electrical good, autos, Telekom and food/beverages) and local analysts/journalists. The CBRT is continuing with its new policy of not meeting investors on a small group basis, but is instead requesting that economists/investors attend their quarterly investor road-shows. Hence we were unable to discuss key issues with the CBRT which was hugely disappointing, given market concerns over the widening current account deficit. In our view the new modus operandi of the CBRT risks leaving the CBRT short of regular two way flow in terms of key market info. "

Many Arab states and Turkey are already cheering President Obama’s decision to endorse Palestinian territorial demands regardless of past American commitments and the direction of past negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. They should beware the precedent, because as every Arab leader and Turkey knows—but few care to acknowledge—is that the Middle East is full of secession struggles."

"A look at possible candidates to be next IMF chief
The Associated Press,
Updated 02:47 p.m., Thursday, May 19, 2011

A look at some possible candidates to succeed Dominique Strauss-Kahn as managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

KEMAL DERVIS: Turkey's former finance minister is widely considered to be the front-runner if the IMF looks outside the European Union for a replacement for Strauss-Kahn.

Dervis, 62, is no stranger to Washington, having spent 24 years at the World Bank, rising to be a vice president. He currently heads the global economy program at the Brookings Institution in the U.S. capital.

As Turkey's finance minister a decade ago, he helped the country recover from a deep economic crisis with an IMF-backed economic reform plan, which set the groundwork for Turkey's strong economic growth and its resilience during the recent global economic recession. He also taught at Princeton University in the 1970s."
