Ethnic strife in Europe...
"Ethnic strife in Europe...
The problems involving non-Western immigrants in Europe may have escalated a step further on October 28, when major riots broke out between Turkish and Kurdish immigrants in Berlin. On that day an authorized demonstration was held, initially in favor of fraternity between Turks and Kurds. On its margins, however, were two unauthorized demonstrations. The subsequent riots were directly related to the battles around the Turkish-Iraqi border between Kurdish nationalists and Turkish soldiers.During the Berlin disturbances 18 policemen were wounded and 15 demonstrators arrested. In past unrest the police had always considered the attacks as coming from the Kurdish side. This time the initiators were Turks, some of whom chased Kurds with machetes.Claudia Schmid, head of the domestic security agency's Berlin branch, warned that similar events might recur."

Guldunya Toren and her child. Guldunya Toren and her child. To prove that good can come from bad, I thought I would revisit a tragic and brutal event that took place approx three years ago in Turkey. Back in 2004 a young Turkish mother Guldunya Toren was murdered by her brothers in what the media still insists on calling an ‘honor killing,’ when in reality such acts can only bring dishonor to all who commit or acquiesce to them. Guldunya Toren who came from the south-east of Turkey was raped by a relation and became pregnant, but understandably refused to marry the man who impregnated her. After the child was born she moved away from her home in the south-east, intending to start a new life elsewhere, however the male members of her family had other ideas having concluded she had brought dishonor upon them ."

"Turkey: Battle of the Islamists 21/11/2007
By Manal Lutfi Istanbul, Asharq Al-Awsat - “We were successful because we presented the best ideas for the Turkish economy, not because we are an Islamist party. We do not describe ourselves as an Islamist party. The Justice and Development Party [AKP] has never conceived the Islamization of Turkey,” said Adiba Susan, a member of the AKP in Turkish parliament. Behind her hangs the picture of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on the wall of her office and on the opposite side are pictures of the Turkish Prime Minister and AKP leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Susan, who is one of many female members of the AKP who do not wear the hijab continued to talk as she fixed her neat short hair saying, “By virtue of the fact that my office is a governmental one, I must hang up a picture of Ataturk but even if I was not subjected to this rule, I would have hung his picture up because I have much so respect for him and for what he has done for Turkey.”"

"Turkey: From Bloody Birth to Power Broker
by Ann Berg
According to legend, its flag sprang from the reflection of a star and the crescent moon in a pool of native warriors' blood. The national anthem exults, 'Martyrs would gush out were one to squeeze the soil!' Of all the Muslim countries created after World War I, only Turkey succeeded in expelling Western occupiers to achieve a modern statehood that many consider miraculous. Today, its treatment by the U.S. as a backwater pawn has roused the nation to defiance: 86 percent of all Turks now hold a negative view of America."
