INTERVIEW: Nilgün Önder on neoliberalism and state intervention in Turkey since 1980
William Armstrong - william.armstrong@hdn.com.tr
The effects of the 1980 military coup are still bitterly contested in Turkey today. The intervention put an end to bloody street clashes among left-wing and right-wing militants, but it also unleashed a period of fierce repression and imposed a nationalist-conservative constitution that is still in force today. The generals also kicked off a root-and-branch transformation of the Turkish economy, which became an early laboratory for IMF and World Bank-supported restructuring programs that opened the country up to global market forces.

The need for Turkey’s reform
Turkey is coming under increased pressure from European partners to make a return to, irrespective of what it’s called, the “peace process,” the “Kurdish opening” or “to strive for national togetherness” - whatever that means. A Turkey with a “constant hypertensive relationship” with a portion of its own population cannot for obvious reasons be an example of tranquility, peace and stability for its neighboring trauma-striven nations.

A transactional relationship dressed up as an accession nobody believes in.

The European Union is taking a cynical approach to its relationship with Turkey and, in the process, undercutting the liberal values that underpin it. Although this may give some short-term benefit to leaders such as Germany’s Angela Merkel, who is facing domestic pressure as a result of mishandling the refugee crisis, it could store up trouble for the future.

Turkey’s economy is threatened on many fronts. A row with Russia and the prospect of the Federal Reserve raising rates have coincided with President Tayyip Erdogan’s increasing politicisation of the economy and bad governance. This could prove a toxic cocktail given the private sector’s high debt.

The aggressiveness of Turkish foreign policy is something new. It goes back to 2009 when, at Davos, President Erdoğan insulted Shimon Peres, then Israel’s president, using the Turkish form of “you” that is normally used for dogs, and accusing him of atrocities in Gaza. That went down very well with his home constituency, less well with Turks who think about things, and it also went down well in the Arab world.

The End of Turkey’s Double Game With ISIS?
By Jonathan Broder 12/5/15 at 3:44 PM
For several years, the White House has watched with mounting frustration as Turkey—a supposed American ally in the fight against ISIS—has left a crucial portion of its southern border thinly guarded. Behind closed doors, U.S. officials have urged President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to do something to stop foreign fighters who fly into Istanbul, then slip across the border into Syria to replenish the ranks of the jihadist group. They also want Erdogan to block the trucks loaded with ammunition and explosives that rumble across the border and to crack down on Turkish middlemen taking part in the oil-smuggling trade—an operation that nets the self-declared caliphate roughly $1.5 million per day. All to no avail.

In keeping with the adage that things are seldom what they seem, reports from Dec. 4 that a Turkish military spearhead had penetrated northern Iraq were exaggerated. Local news media claimed that three Turkish regiments entered Iraqi territory on Dec. 3, deploying in the vicinity of the Islamic State-held city of Mosul in Nineveh province. As it turns out, this supposed Turkish intervention was simply a small rotation of forces, switching out troops assigned to a routine training mission across the border. Ankara reportedly has been training Kurdish peshmerga and other Sunni volunteer forces in the Kurdish-controlled regions of Iraq since November 2014.

Specificaly whether Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan can be so described without impugning his reputation.

Turkey makes progress on sealing Syria border, but is it enough?
WASHINGTON — In July, Turkey granted the United States access to use its military bases to conduct air operations against the Islamic State (IS) and to station search and rescue teams. This may have insulated it from Western frustration at Turkey’s slow efforts to close off a remaining 98-kilometer (60-mile) stretch of the Turkish-Syrian border that US officials say is being used by foreign fighters to enter Syria and by IS to smuggle oil. In addition, the United States recognizes that efforts to seal the Turkish-Syrian border have been further complicated by the lack of sufficient Syrian rebel allies to hold land on the Syrian side of the border, by Turkey’s rejection of an autonomous Syrian Kurdish entity emerging on its border and by the humanitarian need to let Syrian refugees flee from the conflict to safety, according to diplomats and analysts.

The EU-Turkey summit was far from the European Union’s finest hour.
The conclusions of the summit on Sunday were weak and mark another worrying setback in Europe’s fight to tackle its refugee crisis. Rather than put in place the concrete European response necessary to deal with the challenges we face, EU countries had hoped that a new EU-Turkey agreement could be used to help stem the flow of refugees and economic migrants arriving in Greece.

Russia, via Twitter, has officially declared economic war on Turkey. President Vladimir Putin and his cabinet have imposed financial regulations on their new enemy. The targets of these regulations will include, but aren’t limited to, bilateral trade, tourism and investment between the two countries. This comes in response to the recent downing of Russia’s Su-24 warplane by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet. According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russia had violated Turkey’s sovereignty by flying through its airspace without explicit permission.
