Political missteps in Libya cause Turkey's economy to stumble
How can we forget Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister of a NATO member, reacting to NATO plans to intervene in Libya with, “What does NATO have to do in Libya?” But Erdogan quickly reversed himself and became a supporter of the NATO operation and embraced the opposition of Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi, who had not long before awarded him the “Gadhafi Prize for Human Rights."

Turkey’s ruling party takes alarming steps to consolidate power
The crackdown in Turkey was foretold, but that doesn’t make it any less worrisome

by David Lepeska @dlepeska
In the early years of its rule, Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) got on well with the vast network of followers of Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic leader from Turkey living in self-imposed exile in the United States. His loosely affiliated organization, often called Hizmet, runs thousands of schools, businesses and media outlets in more than 150 countries, including many in the U.S., and has in recent decades entrenched itself deeply into Turkey’s bureaucracy.

Why is Turkey falling behind in attracting FDI? - GÜNEŞ KÖMÜRCÜLER
Why is Turkey falling behind in attracting FDI?
Turkey has a severe current account gap problem. The gap has recently decreased to 6 percent of the country's GDP, but this has mainly been caused by the plunge in oil prices. As Turkey is dependent on foreign sources in energy, its energy bill is now decreasing. But this is not the cure to the problem. The Turkish economy continues to be fragile against global currency shocks with the existing structure.

In Konya, Turkey Automobile Parts and Sufism Go Hand in Hand
Since most of the time here I write about automobiles and travel, on a recent trip to Konya, Turkey I searched for the perfect auto angle since I was originally invited there to experience a Sufi festival. I didn't drive while in Turkey, not that I wouldn't have been fine driving, but the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC had ask me and my colleague to visit this city in Turkey to experience the annual festival highlighting a most important Sufi philosophy, Mevlanism. With this in mind we were driven around instead, enjoying the city and learning about the idea that Mevlana (an order of Sufism) and its message can be applied to all humanity.

Turkey's new legal definitions lead to increase in arrests
Rattled by the Gezi Park protests in 2013 and further frightened by street unrest with the Kurdish riots over Kobani in October, Turkey’s government has facilitated detentions and pretrial arrests through a legal amendment that removed the criteria of “strong suspicion” and “substantial evidence” and replaced them with “reasonable suspicion.” The amendment has led to thousands of detentions or pretrial arrests in a short period of time.

In particular, the increasingly visible presence of ISIS in Turkey has polarized the country, with opponents of the Erdogan government saying its support of the Syrian opposition has allowed ISIS to flourish, even generating homegrown support for militant Islam.

Syrian refugee in Turkey
The Turkish government recently began issuing identification cards to refugees from the more than 3-year-old civil war in neighboring Syria. It was a bureaucratic act that will make it easier for the displaced to receive some services, but that adds a worrisome sense of permanence to what should be a temporary status. The government also is contemplating letting some of the Syrians work legally in Turkey.
