Women have to fight against many problems in the business life elsewhere in the World. The male-oriented approach, perceiving woman only as a birth giver and servant in the family is most likely the main reason of the hurdles that women face during their professional lives. This is why many regulations are put forward either on the prevention of gender discrimination against women or introducing positive discrimination for them. Those regulations aim to bring in equality between men and women especially in the business life.

Turkey’s Arab Alawites stand at a crossroads

Ali Gokpinar and Michael Page

December 6, 2014 Updated: December 6, 2014 06:57 PM

Two men sporting long beards, military pants and black T-shirts walked into one of the corner markets in the southern Turkish coastal city of Iskenderun last May. Greeting the shop owner in Arabic, they wanted to know where the neighbourhood mosque was. Finding there wasn’t one, they asked if the shopkeeper was an Alawite. He was. ISIL “is coming to exterminate the entire kuffar Nusayri community,” one of the men shouted before leaving, using the derogatory term for Alawites. The incident sparked rumours that the militant group was building networks in the city. Paranoia has escalated to new heights among Arab Alawites in southern Turkey.

It is tempting to read Elif Shafak’s latest novel, The Architect’s Apprentice, as a love letter to Istanbul and its Ottoman past, or even a kind of apology to the city she left behind when she moved to London with her two children four years ago. The book, which Shafak wrote in English before revising its translation into Turkish, spans the era from 1546 to 1632 and tells the story of the great imperial architect Mimar Sinan, through the eyes of an invented apprentice and elephant-keeper, Jinan, who stows away from Goa as a 12-year-old to escape an evil stepfather.

Turkey and the politics of coal - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

Turkey and the politics of coal

Free schoolbooks for students and free coal for heating for the poor have been the two main types of assistance the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government has provided for years to lure votes. The link between politics and coal has become the subject of heated debates since May, when 301 miners perished in an accident in a coal mine in Soma. The government is accused of ignoring safety standards in the name of boosting coal production while reducing costs. With the advent of winter, coal distribution has accelerated and problems emerged, because tighter inspections and rules in the wake of deadly mining accidents have resulted in a decrease in coal production.

Why are Turkish men paying out of their noses to be exempt from military service?

I was in Israel last week, where I saw a picture of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his wife posing with their youngest son, who is about to be conscripted into the Israeli army. Israel has mandatory military service and, as the photo shows, there are no exemptions. Even young women serve. I was there with a Singaporean, who told me that Singapore also had a so-called “National Service.” As the name suggests, “everybody has to do it. There are no exemptions, not even for the president’s son.”

Turkey's turn to Russia could spell doom for NATO

The US may understand the consequences of imperial overreach sooner than anyone thought possible. Russia's decision to drop the South Stream natural gas pipeline in favor of a deal with key NATO member Turkey may be the first of a series of events that could challenge and ultimately destroy the Anglo-American empire. Turkey's bold decision risks its standing with its western allies by undercutting the EU's efforts to bully Russia, but promises enormous benefit to Turkey's economic influence in Europe.

If the mutual desire of both countries is to put an end to the crisis in Syria, fighting Assad and ISIS at the same time is essential. However, both administrations need to compromise in order to decide on an effective and agreeable plan of action.
The relationship between the United Sates and Turkey has long been strained by disparity in each country's intentions and responses to the current war in Syria. In recent weeks, the tension has heightened between Ankara and Washington as both countries have had to make definitive decisions regarding their response to the war.

Russia, Ukraine and Turkey dropped the furthest in Freedom House's "Freedom on the Net 2014" report, which looked at 65 countries for signs of increased Internet surveillance, censorship, arrests of social media users and more. This year in Turkey, Twitter was temporarily blocked in the run-up to local elections, while in Russia the government was criticized for increasing Internet censorship during the Sochi Winter Olympics and for its military conflict with Ukraine. Overall, Iran, Syria and China hold the top spots as the "world's worst abusers of Internet freedom," according to the report.

How To Trust A Terrorist

They carry guns, dress in jumpsuits and boast impeccable eyeliner — such is the irresistible image the US media has created for the female peshmerga soldiers of two influential Kurdish political parties. In southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria, respectively, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and People’s Protection Units (YPG) have employed battalions of these fighters for many years, but their most recent claim to fame has been their fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Dozens of articles about these “badass women” fighting ISIS have flooded English-language media accompanied by objectifying, and ultimately damaging, images of beautiful women and their rifles. The apotheosis of these soldiers even rose to the point where H&M designed — and then was pushed to recall — a “peshmerga chic” khaki jumpsuit.

On the one hand, our world is subjected to global warming, the depletion of fossil fuels and natural disasters while on the other hand, individuals come face-to-face with economic, political and social crises. Dominant powers presume that the remedy lies in excessive consumption and totalitarian regimes; however, there has to be some kind emergency exit, which our memories and minds can reveal to us. The Association of Documentary Filmmakers sees this as filling the missing fragments of collective memory and taking responsibility for our surroundings as the reason for existence. The organization also believes that a creative approach to crafting the future will gain momentum with the institutionalization of documentary film.

Erdogan's palatial stimulus package

December 3, 2014 2:00AM ET
by David Lepeska @dlepeska

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has of late been ridiculed in the international press for arguing that Muslims discovered America and that women and men should never be seen as equal.

But his claims may have been less a declaration of his beliefs than an attempt to divert attention from the criticism over his new residence: a lavish, 1,000-room presidential palace four times the size of Versailles.

The Real War on Women
December 3, 2014 by Mark Tapson 12 Comments

It’s been a busy week for the oppression of women under Islam.

A day or two before Americans sat down to turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Erdogan – President Obama’s best friend in the Middle East, a man who has made it abundantly clear how he feels about moderate Islam and who has warned that women shouldn’t laugh in public – further endeared himself to feminists everywhere at a summit hosted by an Istanbul-based women’s group when he declared that a woman cannot do every job that a man can do because “it is against her delicate nature.” He dug the hole deeper for himself by claiming that Islam dictated motherhood to be the primary role of women. However, he insisted that his government has always supported equal rights for women and always would.

Jews have lived in Turkey for 522 years. But even friends refer to them as "foreigners". - Your Middle East

Jews have lived in Turkey for 522 years. But even friends refer to them as "foreigners".

"Turkey is their country. And it is not," writes Burak Bekdil in this thought-provoking piece.

In 2008, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's official news agency, Wafa, reported that Israel had released poison-resistant rats to drive Arab residents of Jerusalem out of their homes. Scientists are still trying to understand how rats are trained to distinguish between Muslim, Christian and Jewish residents of a city.

Alev Lytle Croutier's "Harem: The World Behind the Veil (25th Anniversary Edition)"

Had I not read Alev Lytle Croutier's Harem: The World Behind the Veil when it was first published 25 years ago, I would have continued thinking that a harem in Turkey was basically a gathering of women sequestered--imprisoned--for the deviant sexual pleasure of the pasha, sultan or whomever else was in charge. Like that of most other people in the west, my understanding of the harem was a salacious one, and very inaccurate.

Turkey’s pro-Erdogan media purge

On Nov. 24, an unexpected purge took place in the pro-government segment of Turkish media. Three top executives of two prominent pro-government national dailies, Star and Aksam, suddenly lost their jobs. They were fired by Ethem Sancak, a prominent businessman who owns both papers. But many believe Sancak would not have made such a major decision without the approval of the ultimate boss, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. That is why, since then Turkish journalists have been discussing, and gossiping about, the political significance of this in-house purge.
