A draft bill prepared by the Erdoğan government without actually consulting the arts community in Turkey will bring state funded artistic and cultural activities under tight government control.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party, known as the AKP, continue to hold a strong electoral mandate after taking approximately 45 percent of the vote in Turkey's recent municipal elections. Erdogan pushes for interest rate cut
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the Central Bank on April 4 to cut interest rates. Erdogan had made a similar demand some four months ago, while alleging the existence of an “interest rate lobby,” but his wish never materialized. To the contrary, the Central Bank was forced to announce massive hikes of 4 to 5.5 base points in overnight borrowing and one-week repo rates. The bank raised the rates after the Turkish lira fell sharply against the dollar, hit by corruption allegations, the threat of political chaos ahead of elections and a move by the US Federal Reserve to put the brakes on bond buying. Foreign investors began exiting the Turkish market, lured back to the United States by rising interest rates. Erdogan reacted by asserting that he would “tolerate this for some time.”

Focus on foreign affairs is needed
The foreign policy of any country naturally flows from its domestic political system. It is true for any country that politicians will foremost focus on domestic political developments and economic problems and that international issues come after. Finally, in every country, elections usher in a period of exclusive focus on domestic issues. Very rarely do international politics become an issue during elections.

With the local election victory under his belt, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) are fired up for their next battle: the August presidential election. While Erdoğan has not yet revealed whether he will run for president, in light of his recent success the odds that he will have shot up.
This election will be the first by public vote as up until now, the president has been elected by Parliament. It is widely believed that Erdoğan would like to run despite the fact that he was unable to bring about the necessary constitutional reform to increase the president's powers. Erdoğan would head into the election in a strong position.

I believe AKP’s victory in Turkey’s local elections was nothing but a Pyrrhic win. But there was actually one clear, albeit invisible, winner of this election: The Freedom Party. We all know that there is no such party on Turkey’s political map, yet… But election results imply things must soon change:

The national leadership in most democracies is seldom very engaged in local council elections, leaving it to city and state politicians from their parties to carry the banner. The recent polls in Turkey were an exception to this rule: the Prime Minister, Recep Teyip Erdogan, campaigned tirelessly for weeks to ensure a victory for his Justice and Development party (AKP). In the event, his efforts were rewarded with a thumping victory, with AKP securing over 45 per cent of the votes cast. The opposition Republican People’s Party was a distant second with 30pc, while the Nationalist Movement Party limped home with 15pc.

Just Back: tasting tear gas in Istanbul
Abdul-Rehman Malik wins £200 for this account of seeing first-hand the rising anger of people in Istanbul
After a number of encounters I’ve come to the conclusion that tear gas is, overall, accurately named. It makes you cry. Quite a lot. That’s not much of a surprise, I suppose, but what did catch me unaware was the speed at which it hits you. You think you’re at a safe distance as the cloud wafts gently towards you on the light wind (oh, let me just eat this kebab quickly) but then – BAM – it hits you and all of a sudden you can’t see a thing and you’re crying and have döner chicken all over your shirt (sounds like every Friday night).

Erdogan has used antagonism to stay in power
April 07, 2014 12:18 AM
By Sinan Ulgen
Turkey’s beleaguered Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) have emerged victorious from last week’s local elections. Still, the AK Party’s triumph is unlikely to ameliorate the country’s internal conflicts, much less revive its tarnished world standing. The local elections were widely seen as a referendum on Erdogan. The AK Party received 44 percent of the national vote and now controls 49 of Turkey’s 81 metropolitan municipalities, including Istanbul and Ankara. The main opposition force, the center-left Republican People’s Party (CHP), received 26 percent and won only 13 municipalities.
