The US-Turkey Alliance Isn't Going Anywhere

Turkey sent a ripple through the Western defense industry when it recently chose a Chinese company to co-produce a missile defense system—passing on US and European bids in the process. It certainly didn’t help that the Chinese company, China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp (CPMIEC), is on a US blacklist for selling arms to the likes of Iran, North Korea, and Syria. In the weeks that followed, news reports detailed Turkish support for radical fighters in Syria and revelations that Turkey’s spymaster dimed out Israeli intelligence sources in Iran. The spate of events caused some to question whether Turkey is still a Western ally.

In the context of the Arab Spring -- with Islamist parties charged with governing states in the aftermath of crippled dictatorial regimes -- Turkey was heralded as the Muslim world's "third way."

Turkey’s credit card issue could become explosive
ISTANBUL — When police arrested a man near the office of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in central Ankara last month, officers first thought they had caught a suicide bomber. It quickly turned out that the man, Tugrul Bayir, did not have a bomb with him, but his action was potentially explosive nonetheless. Bayir told police he wanted to stage a spectacular protest because of his credit card debt, which amounted to about $17,000. Like Bayir, millions of Turks are in the red, and many are sinking ever-deeper into debt.

It should not be an issue of debate in a well-functioning liberal democracy. But the question of whether a government can and should enforce rules about personal morality is at the centre of current political arguments in Turkey. The outcome of this dispute will determine the future direction of a country that has long aspired to demonstrate how Islam, democracy and modernity can be compatible.

Behind the veneer: The struggle for free expression in Turkey
By Sara Jaffri
Freedom of expression in Turkey is shaped and challenged by struggles on multiple fronts. Journalists and media workers often face retribution for their stories from the Turkish government. Such penalties can manifest themselves in the form of terrorism charges, long term prison sentences, and draconian laws defining absurd media offences. The recent protests earlier this year, centered on the government's plans to demolish Istanbul's Taksim Gezi Park, brought international attention to the deep and messy layers of repression imposed upon freedom of speech, thought and media in Turkish society.

Bringing France To Istanbul, Finding Himself Along The Way
Ekim left France to find part of himself.
When you cross the Bosphorus on a daily basis as hundreds of thousands of Istanbulites do you notice the color of the water. Unlike New York’s East River for example, the color and tone of the straight can vary significantly from day to day or even hour to hour. The waterway that divides the city and Europe from Asia is more often than not a deep cobalt blue. After a big storm or a few days of rain however the aquatic passageway can take on a light sapphire hue or even a foamy blue-green complexion. You might say that the Bosphorus is as changeable and complex as any person in Istanbul.

Fuat returned to Istanbul to take his music career to the next level.
“I had to face people in the metro, in the bus looking at me like I was a terrorist. This was very disturbing for me,” musician Fuat Ergin tells me on a rainy day in a cafe on the edge of Taksim Square in Istanbul. His rapid fire English is both softly spoken and littered with hip-hop aphorisms. He is telling me about what it felt like to be in Berlin, the city of his birth, after September 11.

To progress, Turkey must get back to ‘normal’
By Andrew Finkel
At a political retreat outside Ankara this month, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister, reassured his Justice and Development (AK) party faithful that his government remained on a reformist track.
He dismissed suggestions that allowing women MPs to wear religious headscarves in parliament – a keystone of his “democratisation package” unveiled on September 30 – was an attempt to polarise the electorate or to value the beliefs of his own religiously conservative supporters at the expense of the rest of society.
