Can Poland and Turkey Revamp Europe?

Posted by: Pinar Elman, Roderick Parkes Thursday, November 7, 2013

On November 8, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will give a speech in the Polish capital, Warsaw. His expected message: the need for Poland and Turkey to forge a common European future. The visit is symbolic of the way these two catch-up countries have grown in stature and confidence, and their relationship could well make a serious dent in European affairs. And yet, a second look shows that Turkish-Polish ties are fraught with risks as well.

A reset?
A new tone in Turkey’s foreign policy
Nov 9th 2013 | ANKARA |From the print edition

IT WAS widely expected to spark a fresh burst of anti-Israeli vitriol from Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s increasingly paranoid prime minister. Last month an article in the Washington Post claimed that Hakan Fidan, the head of MIT, Turkey’s national spy agency, had outed ten Iranians working for Israel to his colleagues in Iran. In the eyes of Mr Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) party the allegations were part of a purported Zionist conspiracy to topple their government. Yet when Israel denied involvement in the leak, Mr Erdogan declared that Turkey must accept Israel’s words.

In Turkey, from headscarf to 'immorality' ban

For many in the West, the Islamic headscarf (hijab) that many conservative Muslim women wear is a symbol of oppression. They assume that these women must be wearing this unusual headdress because their husbands, fathers, brothers and others must be forcing them to do so. Even when the headscarf is worn willingly, it is taken by some feminists as the sign of an internalized misogyny — a "false consciousness" into which Muslim women were drawn by patriarchal men.

Turkey's Jewish community in decline

Rumors that Jewish families are leaving Turkey have been making the rounds for a long time now, but as relations between Turkey and Israel deteriorate, those rumors are slowly becoming facts. Turkey’s Jews interpret the hostility to Israel they hear day and night from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as a personal attack against them. The change in mood and in Turkish public opinion as a result of those leaders’ anti-Israeli policy can be felt by the local Jews on a daily basis. Turkey's Jewish community has thrived for decades, but it now feels that its future can no longer be assured.

The shepherd, KasÕm Kaplan, said the animal had suddenly attacked him from behind while he was outside his village grazing his cattle. "We were on a cliff when all of a sudden something jumped on me. I wrestled with the animal that I did not recognize. We fell around 1.5 meters and rolled for 10 meters. I was injured by his claws when he jumped again on me where we fell," Kaplan said. At this point, his cousin Mahmut Kaplan, who was accompanying him, shot the animal with his rifle.

Protests in Gezi Park continue to be a powerful symbol against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (or AKP). In weekly demonstrations across Turkey activists chant, “Resistance is everywhere!” The most important example of this continuing resistance is weekend park meetings organized by protestors in neighborhood parks across Turkey. These park meetings are popular, animated with the feeling that the Gezi Park movement endures and has propelled hundreds of smaller meetings. Attendees talk about challenging the AKP in the 2014 municipal and 2015 national elections. Beyond party politics, park meeting attendees openly discuss the creation of a new society. However, few outside of Turkey know that the “hooligan” soccer fans of Istanbul were instrumental in the first days of the Gezi Park occupation and protest.

HAPPYMON JACOB

I am in Istanbul now, the transcontinental city that connects the East with the West. Straddling the Bosphorus river and home to the whirling dervishes, the city never ever fails to mesmerise you. Moreover, given the confluence of civilizations, religions and ethnicities, Istanbul is one of the most tolerant cities in the world and therefore is a good place to begin a dialogue for peace among those who disagree with each other, some more violently than others. I am here to be part of an endavour to do precisely that - to attend the 60th Pugwash Annual Conference on Science and World Affairs, “Dialogue, Disarmament, and Regional and Global Security”. Turkey’s government is hosting the huge gathering of over two hundred people from around the world.
