Awarding the 2020 Games to Tokyo and not Turkey highlights an unfair pattern

Correction appended: Sept. 10, 2013, 3:42 a.m. E.T.

Before we recently learned that the 2020 Summer Olympic Games were officially awarded to Tokyo by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), there were literally hundreds of millions of people around the world who had our fingers crossed and earnestly hoped that Istanbul would finally become the first Muslim-majority country in history to ever host the Summer Olympic Games.

Individual Freedoms in Turkey - Carnegie Europe

Individual Freedoms in Turkey
Marc Pierini Paper September 9, 2013

What is at stake in Turkey is the issue of fundamental freedoms in the daily life of Turkish citizens and the limits on an elected government’s way to exercise authority.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has witnessed economic success and launched major reforms, in particular writing a new constitution, negotiating with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, passing four judicial reform packages, and installing an ombudsman. In sharp contrast, the AKP’s exclusive reliance on its election victories for legitimacy and increasingly authoritarian practices in the fields of freedom of cultural expression and coexistence of different lifestyles are at odds with its stated objective of establishing an advanced democracy. Popular discontent with these practices and unending restrictions on media freedom resulted in major protests in May and June 2013.

Erdogan's Kurdish Dilemma

Morton Abramowitz, Omer Zarpli
September 9, 2013

Arab states are disintegrating, and their Kurds are emerging as one of the few winners in the Middle East’s turmoil. All this is increasing pressures on Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to somehow solve Turkey’s own massive Kurdish issue now or later face a seriously deteriorating internal problem. Indeed, unless Assad were to fall, finding a solution to Turkey’s Kurdish issue may be Erdogan’s only way of reversing his declining reputation before important nationwide elections next year particularly as the economy also declines. Conversely after almost a year of peace the possible return of PKK violence would be shattering for Turkey. But Erdogan’s Kurdish peace process seems to have lost steam, along with his diminishing hopes of becoming president with strong executive powers.

06 September, 13:36

(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, SEPTEMBER 6 - Turkey's rising halal food sector was at the table during yesterday's Halal and Healthy Products Fair, the only such example in Turkey, as Anadolu Agency reports. The sector, based on products produced and processed with methods in compliance with Islam, has been facing a boom in past few years, and has even been creating its own sub-industries. The fair, which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc, convened prominent producer players in the sector as well as several purchasing groups from the U.S., Europe, the Far East and the Middle East. During his speech at the opening ceremony, Arinc said the halal sector would continue producing and exporting as long as it satisfied people's needs.

Creating a Counter-public to Traditional Media

Germany's Muslim bloggers offer alternative opinions and perspectives on Muslim life. In so doing, they correct the image of Muslims that is portrayed in traditional media. Canan Topçu reports

Rukiye Dogan blogs sporadically. Initially, she just wrote about the things she saw in her daily life, observed in the world around her, or discovered by chance. "There are so many stories on the streets; you just have to write them down," says the young blogger. But as time passed, the "stories from the street" on her blog were supplemented by a growing number of posts on other subjects.

Five Lessons From Turkey’s 1998 Standoff With Syria

It tends to be forgotten, but in the fall of 1998 Turkey and Syria almost went to war. The crisis started when Gen. Atilla Ates, commander of the Turkish land forces, spoke near the Syrian border on Sept. 16. Ates, called on Damascus to expel Abdullah Ocalan and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the militant group that had been fighting the Turkish government since 1984. The drums of war echoed throughout the Middle East as Turkish tanks seemed poised to roll into Syria. Unwilling to go to war, the government of Hafez al-Assad, father of the current Syrian president, complied with Ankara’s demand and expelled Ocalan. Turkey would capture its public enemy number one in February 1999, five months after Ates’ speech.

The Master’s Saga: Erdogan’s Documentary

By: Pinar Tremblay for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on September 5.

While many politicians write biographies prior to running for office and after their term is over, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan already has had a documentary made about him. Teasers and full-page newspaper ads were released about the documentary for weeks. On the evening of Sept. 3, the documentary aired on Beyaz TV, a channel that belongs to Osman Gokcek, son of Ankara's mayor. Serving his fourth term, Ankara's mayor is a longtime notable member of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Just this fact was sufficient to initiate rumors that this was the mayor’s way to get into good graces with the “master” for the upcoming elections.
