Let’s Talk About Istanbul

There’s nothing like a little truth-telling to set the pot aflame.

For nearly a decade, now, I have watched, written about, and circulated within the art scene in Istanbul. For nearly a decade, I have been convinced of its potential. I have praised Turkish artists, bought work by Turkish artists, befriended Turkish artists, collectors, and dealers. I have written for Turkish museums, for Turkish artists, for Turkish collectors. I have attended art fairs, openings, and auctions.

Hugh Pope discusses why renewed Turkey-PKK contacts may shine ray of hope on a Kurdish settlement

A welcome new opportunity has opened up to settle the thirty-year conflict between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). After eighteen months of bitter clashes, the re-launch of discussions between National Intelligence Organization negotiators and jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan has been spurred by a mutual realization that neither side can win outright politically or militarily. In addition to an apparently broad support for peaceful negotiations from public opinion, the annual winter slow-down in fighting and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s need to secure his position before the 2014 presidential elections.

Turkey's PKK talks
Posted By Jake Hess Tuesday, January 8, 2013 - 9:27 AM Share

The resumption of talks between the Turkish government and imprisoned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan has raised hopes for a solution to the Kurdish issue. An advisor to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a Dec. 31 interview that disarmament negotiations were occurring in Imrali prison, where Ocalan is serving a life sentence. They are the first confirmed state-PKK talks since mid-2011. Nothing is known for certain about their specific content, which only the government has commented on to date. But the fact that Erdogan confirmed and took clear responsibility for the meetings has created hope for a breakthrough. A Jan. 3 visit by Kurdish parliamentarians to Imrali -- the first of its kind in the talks -- was also hailed as a historic.

Religian: The shrinking church: Congregations look for solutions as they face declines in membership, attendance

When Joyce Gibbs began attending Zion Lutheran in Phillipsburg, Kan., in 1954, the congregation had to set up extra chairs in the aisle during worship services. In 1964 a new building was constructed to accommodate the rapidly growing congregation.

“We were really a thriving congregation. We had good attendance, an active junior and senior Luther League, a couples group ...,” said Gibbs, who lives in rural Phillipsburg, with a population of about 2,500.

Today, Zion's average attendance has dwindled to about 50 and Sunday school is now a one-room class with a handful of mixed-aged youth. Lorna Paulus, the pastor who divides her time between Zion and nearby St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, Kan., attributes the decline to several factors, including the loss of industry in the town, elderly members who have died and lack of young families coming up behind them.

What we're seeing is not just a backlash against hymnals and potlucks. Nearly every U.S. Christian denomination has seen membership declines in the past two years, including Southern Baptists, who seemed invincible in the '70s, '80s and '90s.

And in 2012 the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life reported for the first time that the number of Americans identifying as Protestant dipped below half, to 48 percent. Only Roman Catholics seem to be hanging on, which experts attribute to a growing Latino population.

WHY ISTANBUL? I’ve loved Istanbul ever since my student backpacker days. It was once the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and I don’t think anywhere has such intoxicating reminders of past glories or such a rich atmosphere of cultural diversity. And the basic geography of the place is just extraordinary: the mosques rising above the Golden Horn, the ferries on the Bosporus, ploughing between Europe and Asia, the castles guarding the entrance to the Black Sea.

Turkey’s Energy Challenges – Analysis

By: INEGMA
January 4, 2013

By Daniel Wagner and Giorgio Cafiero

Turkey has managed to maintain impressive growth rates over the past decade in spite of a lack of indigenous sources of energy. Ankara has pursued a foreign policy aimed at diversifying the country’s energy imports while simultaneously positioning itself as a major energy hub. Turkey’s geostrategic position makes achieving this dual objective challenging, but it has managed to strike a balance between being assertive and deferential in acquiring and managing its energy supply. While the Turkish government’s power to influence events in the region is of course limited, it will be compelled to make some difficult foreign policy decisions in the near term that could substantially impact its long-term energy interests.

TAHA ÖZHAN - Turkey’s Kurdish problem

Turkey’s Kurdish problem

Modern Turkey emerged out of a project of radical identity construction. It was a project that aimed to build a state out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire that would be a secular state, constructed directly on references to ethnic roots and with the goal of Westernization. In the end, what came out of this demographic engineering project was a neurotic social and political structure. Like other nation-building projects in our region, Turkey’s nation building also subjugated certain groups in the new state.

French Economy: France borrows at record low rates

France borrowed about 8 billion euros ($10.6 billion) at record low rates on Thursday, the country's debt agency said, in its first long term bond auction of 2013 in a sign that investors are still looking past a fragile French economy and recent downgrades by credit agencies.

The sale continued a particularly good stretch seen by the government in 2012 when France borrowed at rates lower than ever, despite slowing growth and the country's loss of its top notch rating from agencies Standard & Poor's and Moody's.

"For the benchmark 10-year debt that is of particular interest, the French rates continue their downward trend," said Rene Defossez, bond strategist at Natixis.

The agency said it sold 3.53 billion euros in bonds to mature in October 2022 at an average rate of 2.07 percent, down from 2.22 percent at a similar sale in October.
This was the lowest rate on record paid by France paid for 10-year debt.

Julia Harte | January 1st, 2013

The occasional bicycle rack can be found near pedestrian promenades in Istanbul, such as the one pictured above on the Asian side of the city.

But the city’s heavy traffic and reckless drivers discourage many would-be bicycle commuters. Developing a more bike-friendly Istanbul was the goal of BikeLab Istanbul, a workshop held in late December and sponsored by sustainable transport advocate EMBARQ TÜRKİYE, Dutch urban design company YARD 9, and the Dutch consulate in Istanbul.
